Fairmont Royal Pavilion

Fairmont Royal Pavilion Valutazione: 4,5 Perle

This adults-only luxury resort offers just two room types: deluxe rooms on the second floor, and slightly larger junior suites on the lower level with access to the beach. Sprawling across 11 acres on the west coast of Barbados, the property is situated closer to the waterfront than others in the area, due to it being built before legislation forced future resorts to build further inland. The pink Colonial-style property is romantic, and offers two restaurants and bars, as well as free afternoon tea on the terrace. Because there are only 72 rooms, the beach never feels crowded. Excellent amenities include an outdoor pool, tennis courts, and free non-motorized water sports. But all this comes at a price -- room and restaurant prices are some of the steepest in Barbados.

Sandy Lane

Sandy Lane Valutazione: 4,5 Perle

Decked out in signature pink, the 112-room Sandy Lane is the creme de la creme of Barbados -- indeed, it's one of the most luxurious resorts in the world -- known for unparalleled service and distinct touches. Guest amenities run rampant; perhaps the most noteworthy is access to the super exclusive Green Monkey golf course with a separate apparel line that can only be purchased after completion. A Rolls Royce Phantom, top-notch spa, outstanding restaurants, and celebrity sightings are just a few aspects that set the elegant Palladian-style hotel apart from the rest. This is a very special place, for those who can afford it.

Hilton Barbados

Hilton Barbados Valutazione: 4,0 Perle

Located in the capital city of Bridgetown, the Hilton feels larger than its 355 rooms -- likely because of its high-rise structure and the fact it holds the biggest hotel meeting facility on the island. Sure, it checks all the boxes of a reputable chain hotel, but it lacks a certain charm synonymous with Barbadian hospitality. Rooms are modern and appeal to both leisure and business travelers, but free amenities are rare. Don’t expect a welcome drink, and Wi-Fi comes with a fee; therefore, hotel tabs add up fast (beware of the lounge chairs with “flag up” bar service). For those seeking a big hotel chock-full of American conveniences, though, this is the place.

Mango Bay

Mango Bay Valutazione: 4,0 Perle

Mango Bay is a friendly 76-room resort within minutes of shops and restaurants in historic Holetown -- a quick escape for guests when they need a break from their all-inclusive stay. Packages include meals in one indoor/outdoor restaurant (which feels limiting), drinks (bar opens in the morning), nightly entertainment, and activities such as waterskiing and catamaran rides. The beach area can get crowded, but calm waves appeal to swimmers of all ages. Rooms range in size and views, but are spacious and lack the tacky Caribbean decor found in many resorts. Overall, the resort has a casual sophistication that is ideal for groups and romantics looking for an easy vacation.

Waves Barbados

Waves Barbados Valutazione: 4,0 Perle

With competitive pricing, lovely rooms, and great on-site amenities, this 70-room boutique hotel will attract people who never thought they’d choose an all-inclusive package. With three restaurants, cabanas on the terrace, and a late-night lounge, Waves has a contemporary appeal especially for couples (though families aren't overlooked). Spacious rooms are modern and bright, and most have glass-balconies (oceanfront rooms are worth the cost for the sunsets alone). Room amenities include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and minibars nicely stocked with free goodies; while modern bathrooms spawn envy with door-less showers and eco-friendly toiletries. The quiet beach along Prospect Bay feels private, and the calm waves are perfect for swimming and kayaking. A spa and adults-only pool, located across the street, are extra perks.

Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa

Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa Valutazione: 3,5 Perle

This Mediterranean-style hotel and spa is tucked away in the hills of northern Barbados. Although it lacks oceanfront property, it has something other area hotels don't: Scenic wildlife such as green monkeys, warblers, and roosters roam freely on the expansive property. All-inclusive packages are available, although there is only one restaurant, La Salsa, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (A “rum shop” is also on premise, though open hours are limited.) One- and two-bedroom suites are clean and include kitchenettes, but lack natural light and some modern amenities (such as iPod docks). A large outdoor pool, spa, fitness center, art gallery, nature trail, and beach shuttle may help guests forget about the inland location.

Coral Sands Beach Resort

Coral Sands Beach Resort Valutazione: 3,5 Perle

This quiet 31-studio property opened in 2000 after renovations were made on the former guesthouse. Prices are reasonable, and each room layout is the same with two double beds, a kitchenette, and ocean-facing balconies. Rooms are clean, but decor is a bit dated with bright colors and tube televisions. The location is a perk -- on the south coast and walking distance to grocery stores, and numerous restaurants along “The Gap.” The beautiful beach is the best amenity here, but an outdoor pool, lounge, and bar are added bonuses.

Bougainvillea Beach Resort

Bougainvillea Beach Resort Valutazione: 3,5 Perle

This 138-room Mediterranean-style resort gets its name from the local flower, which is ceremoniously placed in rooms upon arrival. The atmosphere is unpretentious, and reasonable prices make it a good value on the south coast -- it's especially popular with families and wedding groups. All rooms have kitchens or kitchenettes, or guests can dine at two restaurants along the water (though hours vary). This resort prides itself on being eco-friendly, and amenities include a spa, fitness center, kids' club, and water sports.

Accra Beach Hotel & Spa

Accra Beach Hotel & Spa Valutazione: 3,5 Perle

Accra is a mid-size hotel along the lively south coast of Barbados -- a favorite for small conventions that require moderately priced meeting spaces and decent rooms. A large outdoor pool and beach provide a resort atmosphere, and the poolside bar is a fun spot to enjoy a rum punch and mingle. Because of its central location, guests are not confined to the two restaurants on-site, as there are plenty of options in the neighborhood. Rooms in the older wing could use some renovations, and the newer wing offers updated rooms and suites with higher prices. Don’t miss out on the fabulous Chakra Spa -- a defnite highlight.

The Atlantis Hotel

The Atlantis Hotel Valutazione: 3,5 Perle

If the name “Atlantis” conjures up images of the megaresort in the Bahamas, then think again. The Atlantis Hotel in Barbados -- a historic property from the 1800s with only eight rooms -- is the polar opposite. The boutique hotel re-opened in 2009 and offers freshly decorated nautical-themed rooms with canopy beds, stylish furnishings, and modern amenities. (For families, there are two two-bedroom apartments in a separate building.) Located on the remote and rocky east coast, the beach is more suitable for surfing than swimming, and a car is recommended to get around the island. The Atlantis restaurant is popular with locals, and the varied cuisine comes with outstanding views from both indoor and outdoor tables.
